Basic Box has done it again. Luc Gantner of Switzerland won the Nice Regional Championship on the weekend of Saturday, October 17, with Basic Box, in a field of 2,336 players, according to Limitless TCG. It’s the deck’s second Regional win this season after Baltimore. France’s Maxime Launay finished second with Dhelmise.
The format was Temporal Forces to 30th Celebration, the same as at the Louisville Regional a week earlier.
The Nice Regional numbers: Dragapult everywhere, but not on top
Limitless lists 429 players in the second phase, from 35 countries. Here are the most played deck families, plus the other families that reached the Top 8:
| Deck | Day 2 players | Top 8 | Top 16 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dragapult (all builds) | 153 (35.7%) | 2 | 4 |
| Basic Box | 42 (9.8%) | 1 | 4 |
| Festival Lead | 31 (7.2%) | 0 | 1 |
| N’s Zoroark | 31 (7.2%) | 0 | 0 |
| Slowking | 29 (6.8%) | 0 | 1 |
| Dhelmise | 21 (4.9%) | 1 | 1 |
| Hydrapple | 16 (3.7%) | 2 | 2 |
| Seaking | 7 (1.6%) | 1 | 1 |
| Absol Audino | not listed | 1 | 1 |
Dragapult’s share was almost identical to Louisville’s 34.0% and Brisbane’s 35%. The 153 include 109 on the standard build, 24 on Dragapult Blaziken, 18 on Dragapult Dusknoir, and Tord Reklev’s Dragapult Dudunsparce. This time it converted poorly: two Top 8 spots from more than a third of the room.
Basic Box was the opposite. It had 42 players and put four in the Top 16, including the winner. Hydrapple was even more efficient, with two Top 8 finishes from 16 players. N’s Zoroark had 31 players and no one in the Top 16, the second Regional in a row it missed the Top 16 after Louisville.
The winning list: the same 60 that went 77th in Frankfurt
Gantner’s Basic Box runs four Mega Kangaskhan ex and three Meowth ex, with two each of Teal Mask Ogerpon ex, Wellspring Mask Ogerpon ex, Latias ex and Lillie’s Clefairy ex. Single copies of Raging Bolt ex, Chien-Pao, Iron Crown ex, Passimian, Fezandipiti ex and Iron Leaves ex round out 21 Pokémon. The Trainers include four Crispin, four Energy Switch, four Ultra Ball and three Area Zero Underdepths, and the Energy is six Grass plus Psychic, Lightning, Fighting and Water.
Limitless groups identical lists, and this exact 60 is the one Gantner took to 77th place at the Frankfurt Regional. He brought the same 60 cards to Nice and won. Limitless prices it at $64.97.
The runner-up: a $22 Dhelmise deck
Launay’s Dhelmise list is built from lines of four: Shuppet and Banette, Poltchageist and Sinistcha, and four Dhelmise, with two Lillie’s Clefairy ex, Spiritomb, Latias ex and Bloodmoon Ursaluna ex. It plays four Explorer’s Guidance, three Lillie’s Determination and three Gwynn, and only eight Energy. At $22.33 on Limitless, it’s about a third of the winner’s price.

What Nice means for players in the Philippines
No Filipino players are listed in Nice’s Day 2, but the format is the one we play now, and the lesson is useful for local events.
- Dragapult is still the deck to beat, but beatable. It’s been about a third of Day 2 at Brisbane, Louisville and Nice. At your next GYM Battle or Ultra Ball League stop, expect it, and pick a deck with a plan against it.
- Basic Box is the proven answer. Two Regional wins this season, and four Top 16 spots in Nice from under 10% of Day 2.
- A cheap deck can go deep. Dhelmise reached the final for $22.33 on Limitless, a good option if you’re building on a budget.
- Stick with a list you know. Gantner won Nice with the exact list he played at Frankfurt.
